Family Health Center
of Battle Creek
2008 Annual Report
Our Mission
At Family Health Center,
we provide quality
health care with the
belief that all
individuals have the
right to considerate
service at all times
with recognition of
their personal dignity. |
 |
To YOU from Family Health Center
President/CEO, Dr. A.J. Jones
Do you feel as if we are
living in a time warp?
What happened to 2008?
Can you believe it's
2009, ALREADY? Last
year seems to have
passed by faster than
usual, but we were so
busy all year long, I'm
sure that's what made
the time fly.
|
The brief
storylines I've
included for you
and the
graphs below will show
you just how
busy we have
been. In
short, the
Center provided
almost
126,000 services
for almost
28,500
individuals,
and this
includes 400
newborn babies
delivered by FHC
doctors and
almost 3,000
school-age
children seen in
the portable
dentistry
program.
That means FHC
delivered about
19,000 more
services for
about 3,500 more
people than in
2007! Our
monthly average
of new patients
rose to 793 in
2008 - 120
higher, per
month, than
2007.
Eighty-one
percent of all
services were
provided to
patients who
have Medicaid
coverage or no
health insurance
at all.
|
Only a few of the
activities that kept us
so busy in 2008 are
highlighted here for
you:
●
Probably one of the most
significant activities
that got underway in
2008 focused on FHC's
need to increase access
to healthcare in our
communities. (Read
more about this new and
still-developing project
further in this
report.
●
Portable dentistry
stayed busy throughout
the year, hiring
Portable Dentistry
Coordinator - Diane
Buckley - and visiting
27 schools in the
County. They also
visited Foster and
Adoptive Parent Resource
Center, Freedom Schools,
Haven of Rest, Operation
Grad, S.A.F.E. Place,
and Salvation Army,
We already know 2009
will be a big year for
this program. In
August, Kevin Steely,
DDS was hired as
Director of Dental
Services. |
|
|
● FHC celebrated
its fifth anniversary at
its Albion location in
March 2008. In
2004, its first full
year of operation, 1,640
patients received 4,921
services at the Center's
Albion site. In
2008, 3,420 patients
received almost 16,300
services! In July
2008, Sonjia Graham was
employed as the Albion
site Manager.
●
In May 2008, FHC
received the Regional
Health Alliance Wellness
Award for the Center's
Workplace Wellness
efforts including
Biggest Loser
competitions, pedometer
contests, encouraging
staff to take advantage
of YMCA fitness
equipment/programs and
by participating in
Corporate Cup. |
|
● Diabetes
support and weight management
classes were implemented for our
patients and the Center began a
streamlining process to better
track immunization records and
chronic health conditions of our
patients.
●
FHC is participating in an
intense 13-month collaborative
effort designed to improve the
quality of care offered to our
patients who have diabetes.
●
Information technology
improvements/upgrades were made
to the Center's systems,
including our Electronic Medical
Record system at various times
during 2008. The changes
increase systems' efficiency and
manageability, improve disaster
recovery of information should
it ever be needed and reduce
technology costs for FHC.
|
Always
promoting health care,
A.J.
Jones, ND
|
|
|
Unfortunately, FHC had
to say goodbye to its
most loyal staff member
of 9 years. C.J.,
our Golden Retriever
therapy pet whose
nickname stood for
Comfort
and
Joy,
was laid to rest in
October. He will
be remembered always by
thousands of our
patients who knew his
gentle ways and
seemingly always-smiling
face when he visited
them, helping them to
feel better, for at
least a short while and
certainly relieving the
stress of a health care
visit. |
 |
|
|
Expansion/Renovation of
FHC |
| Based on tentative
plans and suggestions
which emerged from
Planning Sessions held
by FHC's Board of
Directors early in 2008,
Executive Management
proceeded to design and
lay out a more
formalized "picture" of
what would need to be
done to increase access
to care for Calhoun
County residents at both
FHC sites. By
mid-year, community
supporters and the State
of Michigan were in
meetings with FHC
representatives
regarding how a service
capacity expansion could
take place, in a
relatively short period
of time, to address the
needs of an ever growing
number of persons with
Medicaid health care
coverage or no health
care coverage at all.
With a need to increase
the number of health
care providers and
support staff, plus
provide room for them in
which to deliver
services, a plan was
developed which involves
Battle Creek site
renovation and expansion
for medical and dental
service provision.
The Albion plan
addresses renovation of
that site for dental
service expansion. |
