Family Health Center of
Battle Creek Celebrates
Wellness
On January
29, Family Health Center
(FHC) held its first
Wellness Celebration to
recognize patients who have
succeeded in making healthy
lifestyle changes.
Those honored at this new
event have taken an active
role in their health care by
stabilizing and managing
their blood sugar levels,
quitting smoking, practicing
good nutrition, losing
weight and making exercise
part of their daily lives.
As a result of their
positive actions, several
have had their prescription
medications for chronic
diseases decreased or
discontinued by their FHC
health care provider.
Dan Bradley has lost more
than 150 pounds, to date,
without surgery or use of
medications. When he
started his lifestyle
makeover two years ago, Dan
was able to walk only very
short distances, was taking
several medications and was
unable to work. Dan
met with FHC Express Nurse,
Mary Nelson on a regular
basis and with FHC Holistic
Health Educator, Amy Dandenault to learn about
good nutrition and exercise.
His exercise was quite
limited in the beginning,
and he was only able to walk
two or three minutes at a
time. Dan kept working
at it and was eventually
able to increase the amount
of time and frequency he
exercised. With his
new-found knowledge, his
high level of
self-determination, and
strong support from his
family, Dan is now off all
medications and is employed.
When asked what the tipping
point was to make a change
in his life, Dan answered
without hesitation, "I
wanted to live long enough
to dance at my nieces'
weddings."
