Family Health Center
of Battle Creek
2009 Annual Report
Our Mission
At Family Health Center,
we provide quality
health care with the
belief that all
individuals have the
right to considerate
service at all times
with recognition of
their personal dignity. |
 |
To YOU from Family Health Center
President/CEO, Dr. A.J. Jones
2009:
What an amazing year for
us all! As we
break into a new year,
let's take time to
review, reflect upon and
give thanks for all we
accomplished at Family
Health Center (FHC), in
Battle Creek and Albion,
for residents of Calhoun
County and neighbors
from surrounding areas.

Talk about excitement!
The biggest projects
undertaken by FHC
involved renovation of
the Albion site and the
beginning of
construction and
renovation at the Battle
Creek site. More
information about these
efforts follows at the
bottom of this page.
|
The brief highlights,
immediately below,
mention numbers and talk
about projects, programs
and plans, but the most
important parts, of all
we do, are the
people - YOU -
whom we consider
ourselves honored to
serve.
●
Of those who
received health care
services at FHC in 2009,
81% had Medicaid
coverage or were
uninsured for health
care. The Center
provided 132,000
services for 30,000
individuals including
425 babies delivered by
FHC physicians.
That means the Center
delivered 6,000 more
services to 1,500 more
people than in 2008.
This is pretty
remarkable given FHC did
not have any additional
room or additional
providers to provide the
increased services! |
 |
●
Almost
2,500 school-age children were
seen through our portable
dentistry program. The
program visited 40 schools
including Ann. J. Kellogg, Doris
Klaussen, Starr Commonwealth and
Salvation Army. Doris
Klaussen students helped the
program throughout the year by
assembling the dental care
"goody bags" given to students
at each portable dentistry site
visited.
●
Barnabas, FHC's therapy
pet, visited the Stars &
Stripes Learning Center
and East Leroy Elementary
School, in addition to
visiting with hundreds
of his friends -
patients of ALL ages -
at FHC. The Battle
Creek site hosted
visitors from the
Educator's Task Force,
Battle Creek
Leadership Challenge,
Detroit Community Health
Care Connection, Cherry
Street Health Services
of Grand Rapids, Planned
Parenthood, United Way
of Greater Battle Creek,
Kellogg Community
College nursing
students, Battle Creek
Health System Partner
Board, Albion College -
Far Side of Health
Program, W.K. Kellogg
Board of Trustees and
Jackson Center for
Family Health.
Little Boy Blue Day Care
visited the Albion site.
In July, U.S.
Representative Mark Schauer sponsored a
Community Health Care
Forum, hosted by FHC, in
Battle Creek.
●
As a designated
Neighborhood Emergency
Help Center, in the
event of a large
disaster in our region
of Michigan, emergency
preparedness planning
and participation in
emergency preparedness
events continued through
2009. The advent
of the H1N1 influenza
allowed FHC to test some
of the planning already
in place including.
Flu Readiness meetings
April-October;
large-scale screening of
patients with signs and
symptoms of flu, for
activities in May;
mask
distribution to patients
and visitors between
October and November,
and an H1N1 clinic at
FHC in collaboration
with Calhoun County
Public Health Department
in November during which
almost 550 immunizations
were given.
●
Reach Out and
Read - a national
program which is focused
on early literacy and
good health at FHC had a
stellar year! The
Center celebrated its
fifth anniversary as a
selected program
participant, and was
selected as the First
Book/Cheerios Spoonfuls
of Stories award winner
for Michigan which
garnered 890 new and
free children's books
for the Center's
program. A total
of 471 new and
gently-used books were
also given to the
program by the Marshall
Presbyterian Center for
Children and the
Pennfield Presbyterian
Church in Battle Creek.
●
With
continuous focus on providing
and ensuring delivery of the
most current and effective
quality of patient care, FHC
developed three work groups of
health care providers and
professional support staff, to
review current practices and
procedures for our patients in
the health care areas of
prenatal care, obesity and
immunizations.
I hope you will take the
opportunity to see both
buildings and talk with staff.
If YOU need our
services - or if you know
someone who might - or if
you have questions about FHC,
feel free to give us a call.

information about us, too:

welcome your visit.

Battle Creek
Site
Expansion/Renovation
Groundbreaking for the
Battle Creek site
construction/renovation
project happened May 1.
By the end of December,
necessary demolition of
abandoned buildings had
occurred, the basement
was dug, exterior walls
were up, the interior
was sealed off, and
construction was able to
progress into the late
winter months.
Partial building
occupancy was on
schedule to begin in
January 2010 with the
entire project to be
completed by mid-year.
Watch our progress!
