To YOU
from Family Health Center
President/CEO, Dr. A.J. Jones
Looking back to the
start of 2007, I
remember thinking that
anything we did in the
new year could not
possibly rival or exceed
all we accomplished the
year before. Boy,
was I ever wrong.
|

Please look over the
mission statement of
Family Health Center
(FHC) above. Then,
look at all the faces
throughout the report.
This is what FHC is all
about: making sure
good health care is
person; recognizing and
respecting the many
things that make one another.
 |
FHC
of Battle Creek and
Albion continues to
grow, to provide more
health care services for
more people. As
you will see in the
graphs below, in 2007
the Center provided
almost
107,000 services
for almost
25,000
individuals. This
is an increase of about
12,500 services,
3,700 more people
than in 2006. FHC
physicians delivered
402 babies in
2007. The monthly
average of new patients
at FHC jumped from 452
in 2006 to
673 in 2007.
Almost
80% of our
patients had Medicaid
coverage or no insurance
at all. |
Other milestones for FHC in 2007
(the list is not all-inclusive,
believe me):
●
Portable dentistry "hit the
road", starting in Albion
schools. (Read more about
the exciting new project in this report.)

In May 2007, the Center
received an added
federal designation as a
provider of "Health Care
for Homeless".
Transfer of the official
designation from Nursing
Clinic of Battle Creek
included the transfer of
patients wishing to
receive health care at
FHC. The Center
now serves as their
"medical home". To
facilitate the shift and
to provide further
outreach into the
community's homeless
population, two
Healthcare Advocate
positions were added to
our staff. They
assist homeless
individuals, as well as
others, in navigating
the health care system
and help them link with
other services in the
community.

●
FHC started a monthly
diabetes and weight
management support group
for our patients,
facilitated by our
Holistic Health Educator
and Express Nurse.
●
Calhoun County Senior
Millage funding was
awarded FHC for a fourth
year to provide dental
services for county
residents over age 60
who have no dental
insurance or are unable
to afford dental care. |

● The
Battle Creek site was
designated a Neighborhood
Emergency Help Center by
Region V Homeland Security
Task Force.
● The
Electronic Medical Record
project was completed in
December when the last paper
records were moved off site
to secured storage.
The Center now handles all
information for our patients
and their health providers
electronically, faster and
safer than ever before.
The Medical Records
Department was renamed the
Health Information
Department. |
|
●
A Mobile Bone Density
unit screened 100
patients during visits
to the Center in March,
April and June.
● Center
providers served as
preceptors for
medical/nursing students
from University of
Michigan and Michigan
State
University/Kalamazoo
Center for Medical
Studies.
● Growing to
a staff size of almost
200 employees, FHC
became one of Battle
Creek's major employers.

As we begin 2008 we know
several things: we will
focus on achievement of
care goals
health status of our obese patients, assisting more pregnant women to
access care
early in their pregnancy, and increasing our number of completed
pediatric
immunizations; the Center will persist in providing health care for a
continually
growing number of patients, the majority of whom are un(der)insured; and
FHC will
go on looking for ways to accommodate more people - patients and staff
alike - and
for ways to advance service delivery. |
|
Your continued
support of all we do at Family
Health Center is needed and is
greatly appreciated.
Please contact
me if you have any
questions, comments,
concerns, ideas or
suggestions related to
how we may better serve
you, your family and
those about whom you
care. |

Always
promoting health care,

Portable Dentistry "Hits
the Road"
In the works for more
than a year, the Center
launched its portable
dentistry project in
2007. A Portable
Dentistry Coordinator
was added to our staff.
The Manager of Portable
Dental Services and the
Coordinator met with
officials at Calhoun
Intermediate School
District and at Calhoun
County schools to
determine where oral
health needs were
greatest and to develop
the visit schedule and
program of services to
be offered. After
receiving permission
from the state, under
Public Act 161 which
allows Registered Dental
Hygienists to provide
specific dental services
under the supervision of
a dentist, the first
schedule was set.
Using portable dental
equipment, two clinics
were held in Albion
schools in November; two
in Battle Creek schools
in December. In
just two months, 305
school-age children
received dental
screenings;
some of them also
received fluoride
treatments and sealants.
Parents/guardians of
children needing
follow-up care but who
had no "dental home"
were helped to find a
regular provider of
dental care for the
child, often at FHC.
Clinics have been
scheduled at several
schools already in 2008. |
